Way back in June of this year I was tasked by my school to create a short film. I was to do the pre-production, production and post-production. Right when I was assigned to do this I was going on a family trip to California, so a lot of the nights that I was there was doing the pre-production. I had planned out what we were going to do and talked to everyone involved on the phone. I had one guy who built the trike that was going to be our guy operating the bike and the only protagonist. He said he had the trike ready to go.
I also had his brother helping us. I had called him a little later and explained what the video was going to be and he told me that his brother has sold the bike even though I had already talked to him about using it. It was a bit of a shock but I told his brother to go check the garage and it was there. Phew!
The whole thing was planned to be shot in four different locations with one main camera (my Samsung Note20 Ultra) as well as a Gopro Hero 11 and a DJI Air 2.
When I got home a few days after planning we got straight to work. The first location was one that we were going to use the drone at. Unfortunately there was road work in the canyon that we were trying to get to. As we were running low on light we decided to go to the second location that needed the drone as this was the only day we would have it. At the second location due to the quarrel with DJI and the U.S. government we were not allowed by DJI to launch the drone. So I improvised and stuck my gimbal on a tripod and held it up were I wanted it. It worked really well as a lot of people afterword’s where asking me is that was a drone.
We were able to get two more locations done that day but we had to go to the canyon the next day. It was a little bit cloudy and raining a bit when we got there which did not match the weather before but we decided to go for it anyways. What we got were some pretty good shots that we did end up using.
For post production I stayed up way to late for two night working on finding music doing monologue and actually editing everything together. I was not too happy with the music and the story didn’t go quite as well as I was hoping it would but I needed to turn it in the next day so I did the best I could.
But that is not the end of the story. In September I decided that now that I had a good amount of time to rework some of my projects I would rework this short film. Pretty much all I did was find some music that fit the video way better as well as removed the half baked story.
And that is the story of how I created ‘The Trike’.
